TRADE PUBLICATION, COLOMER AND CASALS VIP LOUNGES IN BARCELONA AIRPORT
Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat Airport has inaugurated the renovated Pau Casals VIP Lounge in Terminal T1, as well as the Colomer VIP Lounge in the Airlift. These lounges have been reopened to the public after major expansion works, plus the incorporation of passengers’ most in-demand services.
The project seeks to articulate a timeless design solution, striking a balance between the elegant and exclusive aesthetics expected of a VIP lounge and the functionality and adaptability required in an airport. A series of welcoming, comfortable environments have been created with this in mind, both responding to the client’s programmatic needs and offering passengers a different airport experience. The VIP lounges’ architecture and interior design should create a relaxing atmosphere for passengers waiting to board their flights.
Using this philosophy, the spaces have been developed with an open concept, creating different ambiences, separated by metal chain lattices. These lattices, together with the finishes and furniture, have been designed along clear geometries and straight lines, selecting noble, modern materials — using the criteria of proven durability, easy maintenance and cleaning.
In terms of layout, the service areas and toilets have been clearly set apart from other rooms to separate the service and passenger flows, maintaining the greatest spatial fluidity between the main uses. For this purpose, a series of clearly identifiable main routes have been proposed to organise the different environments. These environments are defined by direct and indirect lighting and materials in accordance with their use on the one hand, and by partitions and dividers that are as unobstructive as possible on the other, using screens or metallic lattices that create a feeling of spaciousness, while maintaining an optimal level of privacy and rest. The planning of the spaces’ distribution has also considered constraints of surface area, noise, light and views in line with their function.
