Expansion of the Terminal 4 Security Checkpoints
The Adolfo Suárez Madrid–Barajas Airport continues to advance its operational improvement plan. Our firm has completed the first phase of the Construction Project for the expansion of the security checkpoints of Terminal 4 on Level +2. This milestone enables progress on a strategic intervention designed to respond to the gradual increase in passenger traffic expected in the coming years.
Purpose of the intervention
The main objective of the project is to increase the capacity of the security screening area. To achieve this, the current system will be expanded to reach 31 inspection lanes. This will enhance the efficiency of the process and ensure a smoother flow of passengers. Furthermore, the intervention will allow the terminal to adapt to the needs arising from the airport’s future development.

Main action carried out in the first phase
During the first phase of the expansion of the Terminal 4 security checkpoints, several essential actions were completed. First, the northern area of the existing screening zone was demolished. This intervention created the necessary space to accommodate the new inspection lanes. In addition, the internal layout was reorganized to incorporate the areas assigned to the Civil Guard, the security teams, and passenger assistance. New sanitary facilities were also planned to improve the functionality of the area.

The design of this area has been developed with full respect for the characteristic architecture of Terminal 4. As a result, distinctive elements such as the inclined columns and the materiality of the surroundings have been preserved. This approach ensures formal coherence within the terminal’s departures area. In addition, new technical solutions for climate control have been introduced by replicating the existing totem-based system. The project also includes the expansion of the electrical and data installations, as well as the routing of the necessary ducts from PS1 to the new units.
Finally, specific lighting studies have been carried out. These assessments ensure compliance with the operational requirements established by the different airport divisions and guarantee the proper functioning of all the areas involved.
Expansion of the Terminal 4 Security Checkpoints: A project in progress
The first phase of the project has been successfully completed. Work will now continue with the remaining actions planned for the expansion of the Terminal 4 security screening area. Our team remains committed to technical excellence and to the continuous improvement of airport infrastructure.
