Modernization of Chiclayo International Airport
FBARQUITECTURA prepared the Technical File, Master Plan and Project of the International Terminal Area for the modernization of the International Airport of Chiclayo.
The improvement and expansion works are intended to turn Chiclayo into the air hub of northern Peru. Consequently, trade and the tourism sector, linked to the enormous archaeological wealth of the area, would be boosted.
Scope of the project
This ambitious project was launched with the aim of reaching 2.6 million by 2038. The plan includes the resurfacing of the main runway, which is 2,520 meters long and 45 meters wide.
Following the approval of feasibility studies, the construction of a new terminal building is envisaged, as well as the remodeling of the accesses. The project includes:
- New control tower.
- Fire Extinguishing System.
- Hangars.
- A fuel area.
- A cargo terminal.
Modernity and Culture at Chiclayo International Airport

Geometry in the modernization of Chiclayo International Airport
The design of the new terminal stands out for its abstract geometric shapes inspired by Mochica masks, reflecting the cultural heritage of the region.
Pyramidal architecture and ancestral materials
The airport blocks adopt pyramidal shapes in homage to the Mochica pyramids.

Ancestral technology and modernity
The roof and ceilings are inspired by the advanced metallurgy methods of the Mochica culture. This culture was noted for its mastery in the manufacture and gilding of copper. An art that has left its mark on the terminal’s design.
Energy efficiency and sustainability
The terminal was designed to be energy efficient and environmentally friendly. It sought to minimize impact and adapt to the landscape. Thus, the exterior landscaped spaces will allow for natural ventilation and views, complying with LEED standards.
Modulation
The design of the new Chiclayo Airport follows an efficient structural modulation system. A 9×9 m module and a 1.5×1.5 m module were used. This structure allows for future expansions without affecting the original design, adapting to new demands with ease.
Volumetry
The building of the new Chiclayo airport covers 19,500 m². It has a rectangular projection of 235 x 84 meters and four levels. It is organized in two longitudinal bodies, aligned from north to south, connected in the center by a processing area. Between these volumes, there are landscaped courtyards that provide light, ventilation and solar protection. The courtyards are flanked by two inclined pyramidal volumes in the form of a “double C”. These in turn rise at the upper levels and house functional areas that can operate independently.

Design Premises: Panoptic vision of the terminal

The design of the Chiclayo terminal seeks to facilitate the quick orientation of users. The volumetry and proportions allow for easy identification of areas and spaces. In this way, passengers are helped to find their way around the space.
The key principle of the design is to offer a panoptical visual at the most important points. This includes the check-in area, the shopping plaza and the arrivals area. As a result, a clear view of the surroundings and the route is guaranteed.
Space distribution

The terminal has three outstanding spaces in terms of size, clear height and structure:
- On the second floor are the check-in and arrivals lobbies. Both are defined by a double height.
- The commercial terraces on the second floor overlook the double height of the second floor. And these two spaces in turn are developed under two sloping roofs that rise in the center and lower at the ends. Thus, the north and south areas are closed. These covers are supported by metal pillars give a distinctive character to the space.
- The third space is the main passenger flow on the second floor, with a central deck and natural light.
This airport is a symbol of how tradition and modernity can be integrated to create functional and emblematic spaces.
